Stripper Breasts, Panda Eyes and Number 3’s: 33 things women wished they knew before giving birth.

1. You’ll have the breasts of a stripper, and the libido of a nun.

2. How I would feel after the meds were off.

3. That coughing, sneezing, laughing, farting, jumping, blowing your nose, and just holding it would be an impossible feat as your bladder turns into Niagara Falls.

Oh crap I have a sneeze coming, oh no…. GET OUT OF THE TOILET!!

Ah empty bladder I’m safe at last *ACHOOOO*, ah GEEZE where did that come from? Another pair of nix!!

4. To stock up on granny panties and surfboard pads.

5. That having a shower and putting makeup on at 3am so I looked presentable at the hospital was a complete waste of time. Contractions starting undid all that time and effort as the pain over rode the need to look tidy.

6. Chances are you will go out with one side of your bra unclipped and have one-up, one-down boob until you realize.

7. You will smell like stale, off milk and vomit for the first 6mnths.

8. That there will be times, even when wearing breast pads, that you will leak through and saturate the bed!!

9. That after you give birth it really hurts to pee and Vaseline can help.

10. Wish I’d known what a poo-splosion was and how far up a baby’s back poo can go even when bub is sitting up.

11. Wish I was warned just how much ‘panda eyes’ come into season from the lack of sleep.

12. It is OK to say to visitors that you are napping, and NO YOU CANNOT WAKE MY SLEEPING BABY!

13. That when you stand up your insides will feel like they will fall out!

14. That my husband would get nauseous at the sight of blood and that my husband throwing up would trigger my gag reflex and dry gagging while having a C-section is horrible.

15. That newborn babies have the power to lay flat on their back and vomit a good foot vertically into the air. Its one of those spectacular things you don’t want to see twice.

16. To listen to you gut instincts. If you think you should stay at the hospital when they suggest you go home STAY! Or you just may end up giving birth in the hospital car park!

17. Baby blues… I wish someone told me…and that it’s ok to ask for help.

18. The ring of fire isn’t a joke (midwives laugh because they KNOW) it is literally like a flame being held against your vagina.

19. That it’s hard work! You only hear how wonderful it is and it’s the best thing ever. It is great, but it’s also hard. Sleep deprivation is horrible; you can’t prepare yourself for that. It does get easier though!

20. To duck quickly before being hit with projectile poop and vomit and the urine fountain a little boy can produce when changing his nappy.

21. To wait for 2 or 3 grunts before changing the nappy for a no2! On a few occasions in the early days after the first grunt we’d change the nappy only to be sprayed with poo during grunt no2&3. He’s 7 months now and we’re not rookies anymore!

22. That babies don’t just fall asleep when they are tired, it does take a bit more work than that.

23. To buy shares in a battery company.

24. That you will be more tired when your toddler has one sleep disturbed night than you were after a month of sleep disturbed nights with your newborn!

25. To enjoy the small things in life because once kids come along sometimes you can’t just do those things whenever you like.

26. How hungry I would get during the night! When I was in hospital I had hubby bring in a big drink bottle & lots of snacks because trying to get something real to eat at 3am is almost impossible.

27. Going to the toilet alone is a luxury! There seems to be a switch in children’s brains that says “Hey let’s follow Mum and see what is happening”.

28. That once it’s over the next day feels like you jumped and landed on cement. You don’t realise about your bum and tailbone, as you are too worried about your vagina before hand.

29. The unique sayings you never thought you’d ever say like “get your finger out of your bum” for example.

30. That I could refuse cord clamping straight away and take my placenta home.

31. That dads will use any excuse to get out of a nappy change, especially a number 2.

32. That even when they do start sleeping through the night you will be worried that you hadn’t heard them and still be up through the night just to check them.

33. Seriously nap when the baby does!

For a few months now I have been posting money tips every Monday. I thought it was time for a re-cap. Read all our MONDAY MONEY TIPS here. Feel free to suggest your own as well.

I have one overall tip and that is to set and follow a budget as best you can. This will help you recognize where you are spending your money and if at all you can make any adjustments to save. I suggest doing this during pregnancy and if possible start saving now. Set up a bank account for your little one and make small deposits on a regular basis. You will be surprised how quickly it adds up.

1. Buy disposable nappies in bulk, as they are generally cheaper. You also won’t have to buy them as often.

2. Use modern cloth nappies and reusable cloth wipes. Cloth nappies have come a long way and this could save you thousands of dollars.

3. If you use disposable nappies you could try using Huggies nappies at night and a cheaper brand during the day, or even cloth nappies during the day.

4. If you are worried about trying a new nappy brand, many companies offer a free sample. Otherwise ask a friend what they use or ask us and we’ll post on our page.

5. Buy “ factory seconds” disposable nappies. Most times there is nothing wrong with them, you may only get one or two duds.

6. Use a wet cloth or face washer to wipe your baby/child after eating, instead of using baby wipes.

7. Take all hand-me-down clothes and shoes that are offered, especially if you need clothes for childcare or playgroup.

8. Libraries: There are three great libraries available these days.

Toy libraries- usually run by its members, where you pay a small yearly fee to join that allows you to borrow toys for a certain period of time before swapping them again. Great for large items and for trying out different toys to see if your child likes them.

Book libraries- when your children get a bit older and like looking at books a library is a great place to be a member of. They often run story time and do small activities for children.

Nappy libraries- a relatively new concept where you can hire out modern cloth nappies to try. A great idea if you are not sure which ones to buy. Simply try a few brands before committing to purchasing a whole heap of nappies.

9. When shopping for baby clothes or just shopping in general, keep a list in your bag of the clothes that you already have, in each size that you have. For example, size 1 shorts, size 2 t-shirts, singlet’s etc.

Then, if you see clothes on sale, especially at the end of each season, you can buy items in the sizes you need, without ending up with too many clothes of the one size or item.

10. As your due date approaches, check the balance of your phone and internet allowance so that when you start making calls and sending messages about your little ones arrival, you don’t go over your credit limit.

It is very easy to lose track of things in all the excitement and end up racking up a huge phone bill.

11. Every week when you do a grocery shop, add an extra $10 gift card to your shop. By the end of your pregnancy you could have up to $400 in gift cards that you can then spend on the extra items you will need once your baby arrives.

12. Before your baby is actually standing and walking, shoes won’t really be necessary. Hold off on the shoes and just buy some decent socks that will stay on and keep those tootsies warm.

13. Putting things on layby can save you a lot of money and time, if you know what you want to buy. Layby is also a great option if you are not so good at putting (and keeping) money in a savings account.

Often during June and July, a lot of businesses have sales and this can be a great time to put things on layby for Christmas and birthdays.

My top suggestions if you are thinking about putting items on layby:

– Make sure the items you are putting on layby are things you want/need

– Do your research into the item so when it comes on ‘sale’ you know how much of a saving you are getting.

– If you are purchasing something now for Christmas, think about how old your baby/child will be and make sure it is appropriate.

– Make sure you read the terms of the layby. For example- Is it interest free? How many weeks do you have to pay it off? And can you afford it?

14. Stock up on kids clothes at the end of each season for the year after. Buy them either one or two sizes bigger. You can often get kids clothes for half price or even less.

15. If you buy nappies that come in a box, save a box every now and then to put your babies clothes in that they have outgrown.

You can make a box for every size, label them easily and they stack really well in your cupboard or even under the bed.

16. Babies and children judge gifts on the fun factor, not the cost, so you don’t need to spend a fortune to make them happy!! Things like kitchen utensils, pots and pans, an old remote or old phone make great ‘toys’.

17. If you have gender specific bedding from your first child, it is not essential to go and buy bedding to suit another gender for subsequent children. Your baby will not know the difference, and if the bedding is still in great condition, save the money for something else, like nappies and wipes.

Buy and sell different items on ebay, Gumtree and Buy, Swap and Sell pages. Especially brands you know and trust, and for items you are not sure how much use you will get out of.

19. Check to see if you are entitled to any benefits through Centrelink. It may be a hassle to fill out the forms but every little bit helps.

20. When your baby starts on solids, make your own. Cook up different mashed fruits and vegetables and freeze in ice cube trays. If you are prepared beforehand it will make it so much easier.

As always, these tips are just that, tips. From my experience (only 5 years as a mum) the above tips can come in handy when you feel overwhelmed about how much a baby/child can cost.

If you are confused about Modern Cloth Nappy terminology, here are a few simple terms that should help.

All In One (AIO): A complete nappy. It is a fitted nappy, with an outer waterproof layer and absorbent layer built in and doesn’t require a separate cover. These nappies can have a longer drying time due to the absorbent layer being built in.

All-in-two Nappies (AI2): These nappies are complete but have a snap-in absorbent layer to make for faster drying times. With these nappies, the waterproof outer layer and absorbent inner layer can be washed and dried separately.

Aplix: Aplix is a brand name like Velcro and hook and loop. It is used to fasten nappies rather than snaps.

Bamboo: Fabric made from the bamboo plant. It resembles cotton but is softer, more absorbent and has antibacterial qualities. Available in fleece, terry and velour.

Booster: An additional piece of absorbent material placed inside a nappy to increase its absorbency.

Cloth Wipes: A fabric square, often of flannel or terry, that is used instead of a disposable wipe.

Cover: A cover is used over fitted nappies or traditional terry squares to stop wetness from leaking through onto baby’s clothing. Covers are usually made from waterproof breathable fabric such as PUL (polyurethane laminate), wool or 100% polyester fleeces.

Flat Nappy: Traditional terry toweling square nappies that need to be folded in to a nappy shape and either pinned on or attached using a snappi nappy fastener.

Fitted Nappy: Are a sewn shaped nappy made out of various materials including flannelette, bamboo or hemp. They close with either hook and loop or snaps. Fitted nappies are used with a cover.

Flannelette: Very soft densely woven cotton used for fitted nappies, lining of AIO’s, boosters and for absorbent layers within nappies and boosters.

Hemp: Hemp is an absorbent fabric made from the pulp of the hemp plant.

Hook and Loop: A generic name for velcro, apilix and touch tape, which are all used as fasteners for nappy products.

Liner: A liner is used directly under baby’s bottom to both keep it dry and also to make disposing and cleaning off of poo easier. Liners may be cloth or disposable.

MCN: Modern Cloth Nappies.

Polyurethane laminate (PUL): is a soft clear coating of polyurethane that is applied to the back of fabrics resulting in a product that is both waterproof and has a small amount of breathability.

Pocket Nappy: A nappy made by sewing together a waterproof liner and a cover, leaving an opening, or pocket, for adding absorbent material. For wet nappies, just the stuffing can be changed rather than the entire nappy. Pocket nappies are a fast drying and convenient nappy.

Prefold: Prefolds are prefolded terry, flanelette, hemp or bamboo nappies.

PUL: Polyurethane Laminate.

Snaps: Snaps, or press-studs, are used to fasten nappies. They are positioned either at the front, the side or the back.

Suedecloth: A 100% polyester fabric that is super soft to the touch. It is used as the lining in nappies and draws wetness away from babies skin. It is highly stain resistant.

Velour: Velour is a velvety fabric made from a mix of cotton and polyester for cotton velour, or bamboo and polyester for bamboo velour.

Wool: Wool refers to fabric woven or knitted from the shorn hairs of sheep, goats, or llamas/alpacas. Nappy covers made from wool are naturally durable, breathable and water resistant.
